Manitoba Budget Sparks Debate On Spending and Taxes
Late last week Manitoba's 1971 72 budget was unveiled by the NDP promising no new taxes but flagging the largest spending rise in province history. The increase, about 60 million dollars, drew opposition concern over revenue projections and the hiring of civil servants in Welfare and Mines Natural Resources. The article notes significant raises for cabinet committees, scrutiny of Finance Minister Saul Cherniack's revenue forecast, and questions from Sidney Spivak about personal income tax versus sales tax outcomes. It also mentions the resignation of a former Liberal premier from the Manitoba Hydro Board and anticipated debate in the legislature over flood control and hydro development.
