Canada’s war hero honored with Barker Day in Dauphin

In Dauphin a May 13 ceremony renamed Dauphin Regional Airport Lt. Col. William Barker VC Airfield to honor the First World War flying ace born there. Barker Day was proclaimed, with the Canadian Forces Snow Birds staging an air show to celebrate the unsung hero. The Swan River Star & Times reports progress on a junior hockey franchise as about half the required funds, around $50,000, have been raised. Dauphin’s 1998 budget passed May 14 with a 1.67 mill tax increase, drawing opposition from two councillors. Four-Town Journal notes Spy Hill’s Jeff Odgers will host a celebrity golf tournament July 11–12 at Carleton Trail Golf Course.

Patchy rainfall across Manitoba fields leaves crops in need of moisture

Across the Foxwarren to Inglis region, rainfall during seeding has been highly variable with areas from Binscarth to Russell and Roblin recording as little as 1 to 2 tenths of an inch. Despite uneven moisture, emergence remains fair and farmers expect rain in the next 10 to 15 days to sustain growth. See Pasture Page 3.
