Assiniboine flood control dam urged near Russell plan
At Brandon meeting officials from 18 municipalities and Brandon and Portage la Prairie urged federal and provincial governments to proceed with planning and building a 6 million dollar flood control dam on the Assiniboine river west of Russell. They seek compensation for about 60 farmers and two municipalities affected by the dam and reservoir. Reeve Armstrong summarized local sentiment: willing to move for the project if proper compensation is provided for land and infrastructure. The group also called for a detailed flood-damage study and financial relief. Mayor Henderson of Portage la Prairie was elected president, with Oswald MacKay as vice-president.
