Russell Curling Rink Elects Directors at Annual Meeting

The Russell Community Curling Rink Limited held its first annual shareholders meeting with twenty-three attendees. A. G. Smellie was named president and J. A. Burgess secretary treasurer. nine directors were elected, plus changes to officers and numerous honorary posts. A two day racing programme, improved exhibit hall, and grounds work were announced.

Slaughter House Destroyed By Fire Near Town

Fire yesterday afternoon destroyed Mather's slaughter house just northeast of town. Russell fire fighting equipment reached the scene but were unable to save the building. The blaze is believed to have started from burning grass.

First Game Friday Junior Baseball League Formed

Representatives of 81 clubs formed a North-Western Manitoba Junior Baseball League in Russell to organize play with teams Shoal Lake Oakburn Rossburn Birtle Foxwarren and Russell. Russell hosts Shoal Lake in the league opener Friday at 7 pm on the exhibition grounds diamond. Popular Farmer Dies Suddenly Lawrence Cusitar

Lawrence Cusitar a longtime Russell district farmer died after a brief illness from a cold. Rev J E McNeill officiated at the funeral with pallbearers including Tom Kieper Bill Thickett Jim Thickett Harry Pettitt Bill Pettitt Leslie Rea and Gordon Rea. He was born March 17 1898 at Brightside and survived by two sisters and three brothers and a sister Mrs Maud Rea of Winnipeg.

Mothers Honored At Special Service

Knox United church held its annual Mother’s Day service with Miss Marion Brownlee delivering the day’s message. The Junior Choir conducted by Miss Louselle Leifer performed two anthems and a quartet, with songs by the beginners and primary group of the Junior Congregation and Sunday School under Mrs. T. W. Shaw. The Young Women’s Club presented a bonnet to Mrs. Shaw as tribute, and Rev. J B McNeill reminded that duty to mothers and service to God lasts beyond one day and requires year round devotion.
