The Russell Golf Club elected to revise its prize list and named new associate directors. The club also voted to declare itself dormant for the 1948 season, affecting schedules and membership activities.
The Russell Community Curling Rink Limited held its first annual shareholders meeting with twenty-three attendees. A. G. Smellie was named president and J. A. Burgess secretary treasurer. nine directors were elected, plus changes to officers and numerous honorary posts. A two day racing programme, improved exhibit hall, and grounds work were announced.
Manitoba farm women are invited to describe needs in farm homes and may win cash prizes from the Central Mortgage Corporation and the Manitoba Department of Agriculture. First prize 125 dollars, second 75, third 90, six honorable mentions 25 each. Closing date August 31, 1948.
The Legion and Elks cancel their annual softball event on May 24 due to backward spring conditions and busy rural residents on the land.
Fire yesterday afternoon destroyed Mather's slaughter house just northeast of town. Russell fire fighting equipment reached the scene but were unable to save the building. The blaze is believed to have started from burning grass.
Preparations and practice are underway in the Collegiate for the field day to be held at Bin Scarth. Teams train for events, aiming to showcase speed and skill in a local school program.
General Albert Orsborn, CBE, arrives at Windsor station Montreal and heads to Ottawa to start a Canadian tour visiting Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver. He is greeted by W. A. Mather, president of CPR, and Commissioner Charles Baugh, head of Salvation Army in Canada.
Representatives of 81 clubs formed a North-Western Manitoba Junior Baseball League in Russell to organize play with teams Shoal Lake Oakburn Rossburn Birtle Foxwarren and Russell. Russell hosts Shoal Lake in the league opener Friday at 7 pm on the exhibition grounds diamond. Russell lineup includes Jack Keating Bob Anderson Gerald Davidson Walter Johnson Marshal Glasman Jack Mather Dane Wowk Jim Gillespie Laurie Whitmer Ala Leifer Dean Vinnell George Smellie.
A Roblin event brought together older boys with sessions led by Reverends Taylor Hambly Vincent McNeill Herland Wilson. Prof Cragg urged wartime ethics and service, urging ministry as a path, while permanent officers were elected including Ray Cryderman as president and Logie Smellie as secretary.
Lawrence Cusitar a longtime Russell district farmer died after a brief illness from a cold. Rev J E McNeill officiated at the funeral with pallbearers including Tom Kieper Bill Thickett Jim Thickett Harry Pettitt Bill Pettitt Leslie Rea and Gordon Rea. He was born March 17 1898 at Brightside and survived by two sisters and three brothers and a sister Mrs Maud Rea of Winnipeg.
Enthusiasm from last Friday's session keeps the Russell Board of Trade alive. A nominating committee formed to present a slate of officers at tonight's meeting in the Legion room. CNR agent H. E. Bruyere will show Emerson floods films after the business portion.
Knox United church held its annual Mother’s Day service with Miss Marion Brownlee delivering the day’s message. The Junior Choir conducted by Miss Louselle Leifer performed two anthems and a quartet, with songs by the beginners and primary group of the Junior Congregation and Sunday School under Mrs. T. W. Shaw. The Young Women’s Club presented a bonnet to Mrs. Shaw as tribute, and Rev. J B McNeill reminded that duty to mothers and service to God lasts beyond one day and requires year round devotion.
