Farmers reject federal aid tweaks in western Manitoba
Federal agriculture minister Lyle Vanclief announced changes to NISA and AIDA in Brandon and Estevan but farmers and KAP president Von Dewar say the plan falls short. The updates lower NISA payout triggers to 20000 and allow easier withdrawals while advancing up to 60 percent of AIDA funds. Critics warn the AIDA criteria exclude many who suffered multi year losses and call for a full restructuring and per acre payments. Premier Filmon and Agriculture Minister Harry Enns echo calls for broader relief as younger farmers remain without sheltering margins.
