Russell Lodge Wins Degree Team Honors at Manitoba Elks Meet

Russell Lodge earned the Stark Degree Trophy for best degree work at the Manitoba Elks Association convention in Portage la Prairie. Dauphin Lodge captured the Eamer trophy for charity and community service. Souris Lodge took the Gad Gilam trophy for smaller towns. Officers elected include First Vice-President A Wadelius The Pas and Esquire W Bjarmarson Gladstone.

Appetites Satisfied At Hereford Barbecue

A Manitoba Hereford Association field day at Primrose Hereford Farm drew over nine hundred attendees from Russell and distant towns. Jas Moffatt led the 550 pound meat barbecue prepared overnight, with Bob Stewart coordinating local arrangements and J H Connor judging livestock.

Dr More Honored Before Departing for Gladstone

Dr Jonn H. More leaves this week to join a clinic at Gladstone. Friends and associates honored him at two functions over three years. Kiwanis meeting saw him receive the past president’s button and cuff link. Legion and Chamber of Commerce event bid him farewell with a club bag from Jack Shipp.

Craigie residents Mrs Brenner and Mrs Bert Horning of Binscarth visited Mrs Ray Spencer last Thursday. Mr and Mrs M Stevens and family visited Mr and Mrs R Self at Harrowby on Sunday. Adolph Steinwaldt of Camrose Alberta visits W Tennant family and relatives. D McKinnon and Brian drove to Neepawa on Tuesday to pick up Doreen. Cheerio Club meets next week for a report.

Game and Fish Members Plan Season Activities

Russell Game and Fish Association held a semi annual meeting June 15 in curling rink club rooms to map the season. The July 22 Silver Beach picnic was announced and plans for crow and magpie competition with ten cents per leg, plus prizes for top three, were approved. Fish contests now include trout, jack and pickerel with prizes for biggest fish in Manitoba waters. A junior rifle club formation committee was named, and W W W Wilson reported on the Manitoba convention at Neepawa last March.

Highway group organized along US-83 route

A Manitoba United States Highway 83 Association was formed at a June 13 meeting in Birtle organized by the Russell Chamber of Commerce. RG Smellie was named president with R Olson as vice president, and an executive including Alvin Nield Glen Fowler W J Abbey Ken Crewe and Harry Armstrong. The group aims to publicize the highway and present its needs to government with a membership fee of 10 dollars yearly and plans to recruit towns chambers and rural municipalities from the US border to Flin Flon. The Russell Chamber will appoint a secretary treasurer and mark the highway in cooperation with the Department of Public Works. Representatives from Russell Shellmouth and other areas attended.

Hon W C Miller addressed delegates at the Manitoba Trustees Association convention in Russell Elks Hall saying education funding criticisms lack full facts. He cited a 13.06 million dollar budget and progress in reducing teacher shortages to about 150 permit teachers next term.
