Memorial project organizers in Russell call a June 27 8 pm meeting at the A&N.W. hall to form committees for finances plans and construction of a Memorial Bank. Invitations extend to all towns organizations and districts for broad representation and early progress.
Chas McFarlane and Bill Yuel were appointed official delegates of the Russell Branch of the Game and Fish Association to the provincial convention at Clear Lake on June 23 and 24. Other members of the local branch will attend. Hay Gillespie, director of the provincial body and president of the local branch, and Secretary William Hancock plan to be present.
Scarlet and Gold, Russell Collegiate Department’s year book, edited by Charlie Buchanan, is ready for distribution. The 1947 edition highlights school activities with class pictures. Orders can be left with Charlie Buchanan Burke McNeill or Mr C Bachinski for 50 cents.
Secretary H R Barry is sending prize lists for the annual Russell Agricultural Society exhibition and anyone not on the mailing list should contact him soon. Several classes show added prize money.
C A president C Berkinshaw of New Toronto Ont elected to lead the Canadian Manufacturers Association for 1947 48 at Banff Alta He is vice president and general manager of Goodyear Fire and Rubber Co succeeding Col H S Tobin of Vancouver.
Alvin Robb of Russell Lodge No 20 BPO Elks was elected first vice-president of the Manitoba Elks Association at the Portage la Prairie convention last week. A G Smellie and Victor Bird were also in attendance.
The town council adopted Bylaw No. 434 to close shops, entered in the bylaw book at Thursday’s meeting led by Mayor Mather. Only other business was payment of $565.24. A joint directors and council meeting was set for Tuesday regarding the memorial rink project, with a report elsewhere.
A Department of Trade and Commerce review finds Canadians embracing fun and fitness with wartime demand driving a surge in toys and sports gear. Fishing tackle now produced by about sixty firms, hockey sticks baseball bats archery goods gym equipment and even 22 rifles show growth. Shorter hours and more leisure expand markets and aid foreign trade, especially with the United States Newfoundland and South Africa.
