Local businesses brace for higher property taxes in Russell
In Russell, business property taxes rise 10 to 18 percent for 1990 while residential taxes fall. Dale Brown and others warn the change hurts rural commerce as store, inn, and pharmacy owners report substantial increases and question the fairness of shifting tax burden. Auto insurance hikes eyed by Manitoba Public Insurance
Winnipeg residents face higher auto insurance next year as rising claims push costs above inflation. Grahame Newton says increases have been kept below three percent since a sharp 18 percent jump two years ago that helped topple the NDP government. The insurer posted a $782,000 loss for the six months ending April 30, contrasting with $8.4 million in the prior year.
