Government moves to restore widows benefits after WCB review
The Workers Compensation Board will reinstate benefits and retroactive payments to about 45 widows and widowers whose benefits were terminated between 1985 and 1992 due to a dependency test. The plan includes $27 million for life claims, a $10 million retroactive fund, and $17 million for future life-spanning benefits with $3 million for eligible remarriages before 1985. The Manitoba premier announced separate legislation to provide an $83,000 one time tax free payment to those widowed before 1985, affecting 250 to 300 people at an estimated $21 to $25 million.
