Hints of Future Policy on World Food Shortages
Reports from London Washington and Ottawa indicate further Canadian action to alleviate world food shortages. Acting Prime Minister Isley cites a projected ten million tons of bread grains May through September 1946, with Canada to supply 23 million tons and a 34 million ton deficiency. The goal is to narrow the gap to under one million tons, with Canada aligning with the UK and US in ongoing reviews and additional grain support. Wheat certificates payments are expected to begin in June, with cheques issued for 1943 wheat production certificates as soon as possible. Prisoners of war on Canadian farms receive 50 dollars monthly plus board, lodging, and daily credits for canteen purchases, with 80 cents per working day paid to the prisoner via the Department of Labour. Over 1,639 municipalities have applied for War Assets materials, with 103 full and 350 partial approvals, and surplus property sales handled through War Assets offices without full division notification.
