Aid agency reports grain donations rise in 1997 year
Canadian Foodgrains Bank says total grain donations reached 14 396 metric tonnes for the year ended March 31 1997, up from 14 224 tonnes the prior year. Prairies donors contributed 11 854 tonnes up 359 from last year while Ontario donors supplied 2 542 tonnes down seven per cent. Negative impacts on the Prairies included crowded elevators and poor harvest weather, Ontario saw soybean acreage rise as farmers shifted planting intentions for higher monetary returns. The agency notes monetary value rose about ten per cent and expects further gains with fundraising and weather favorable trends. The Winnipeg based group formed in 1983 includes 13 church partners.
