Keep Weeds Down To Conserve Moisture

Summer tanow and weed control are the main ways to save moisture in Prairie grain fields. J. J. Lehane of the Canada Department of Agriculture reports losses up to 60 percent in soil moisture reserves and 50 percent in crop yields due to weeds in summer fallow. He notes moisture loss is greatest when cultivation is delayed to late June or July and that rainfall timing greatly affects moisture conservation.
