Citizens sweltered as thermometers near the 100 mark on Monday with official CPR readings at 98 degrees. Relief came late in the evening when a cool breeze swept across the district.
Russell seniors battled heat at Birtle beating Coultervale 4 1 in extra innings after regular 1 1 tie and two late scores. Plumas defeated them in the next one inning game. Juniors lost first game, and team travels to Binscarth and Grandview with hopes for strong showings.
A general meeting of curlers and others is called by the club executive to discuss plans for a new curling rink in Russell. The meeting happens Friday evening August 1 at 8:30 in the Council Chambers. Land on Westbourne Ave past the CPR station has been purchased and the council will grant lumber and sheet metal from the old rink.
Be sure to take your car through the Safety Lane when in town for the Sports Day on Monday. The note emphasizes traffic safety and orderly conduct during the event with noobi specifics.
The safety lane equipment will arrive in Russell on the morning of August 4 and be set up on Main Street under the sponsorship of the Board of Trade. Vehicle owners may have their cars tested at no cost to obtain an ok sticker after inspection of brakes headlights lights wheel alignment horn windshield wiper rear view mirror steering and other features. About 50 percent of tested vehicles were rejected this year for serious faults, especially brakes and headlights, prompting a call for owners to have defects repaired promptly to prevent accidents and meet safety standards.
Russell's baseball team and horses linked to Norman McLennan Lloyd Hackman and Miss Nora Dunn starred in Rossburn fair events last Thursday. The senior team defeated Solsgirth 4 0 for 100 prize after beating Binscarth 11 0 in the final. Jack Wilson threw no hit games in both wins. Hackman s Nell y Bly won the half mile, while Nora Dunn s Pep ter took second. Audrey Craig Miss Meddiesome and Montague won the mile dash, Hackman also won the chariot race over McLennan s team. Rossburn enjoyed a sunny day as a large crowd attended.
Mayor Andrew Mather proclaims Monday August 4 a civic holiday in Russell as the Board of Trade organizes a big sports day. Baseball and softball tournaments with cash prizes, pony rides, midway attractions, and a community dance at Richt ASN hall are planned. Twenty teams and local businesses are urged to help with booths, policing, and grounds prep ahead of the event.
Russell Curling club earned permission to use lumber and iron sheets from the old rink for a new facility. The town council, led by Mayor Mather, approved a by law and a 1948 to 1982 special levy to replenish the reserve fund after funds were spent on the Memorial Rink. Accounts paid total 457.49. Councillors Cross and Gillespie attended the Thursday meeting.
Funeral services for the late Robert M. Robb were held at Knox United church after a private service at his residence on July 17. Dr. H. B. Wallace of Emerson and Rev. J. E. McNeill led the service with interment at Russell cemetery. The pallbearers were Hay Gillespie, Andrew Mather, J. A. McKinnon, J. G. Drever, Chas. Silver, and E. B. Rea.
Manitoba Power Commission reports June purchases and generation at 8,805,650 kWh, up 34.15 percent from last year. Construction across 11 electrification areas covers about 1,400 farms. Oakbank and Shellmouth, Springstein energized. new Winkler substation added for cannery capacity. Substation transformer shortages hinder the million dollar system upgrade.
Late Monday night a hailstorm swept through the Rochdale Lennard Cracknell districts. Estimates put crop damage at about 75 percent in Rochdale and Lennard, with less damage north of Cracknell. Hailstones as large as hens eggs shattered windows in several farm homes.

Edwin Moore, aged gardener, showcased his garden this week with peas and mint. He noted large peas were well filled though the mint was not fully valued, expressing quiet pride in his modest harvest and handiwork.
