Manitoba seeks to extend property rights to common law partners

Proposed legislation by Attorney General Gord Mackintosh would recognize rights and obligations for couples in conjugal relationships lasting three years or more, including property sharing upon breakup or death. It creates a registry for immediate rights, allows opt outs by written agreement, and applies to couples living together on enactment. The bill amends 56 statutes and aligns with Charter principles while awaiting Canada’s Walsh vs Bona ruling.
