Horticultural notes on fluorescent lamps for violets

Fluorescent tubes lose light at ends and over time darken. Growth lamps like Gro-Lux offer blue red emphasis for plant growth and are pricier but use energy efficiently for African Violets. Use 12–14 hours daily, with a dark period each 24 hours, and adjust duration by season. Place dark green leaf varieties 10–14 inches under Gro-Lux or 12–14 inches under standard lamps. Incandescent light is not needed. Also notes on a skidoo derby date and Winnipeg visits by local residents.
