Ottawa seeks new farm safety net plan after cabinet split

After a December meeting ended in a stalemate, Agriculture Minister Lyle Vanclief said Ottawa will reveal a revamped farm safety net in March, with or without provincial cooperation. He urged provinces to match any new federal funds, otherwise the program may be too small to help producers. Proposals under review include paying farmers to retire land, a retraining fund, early cash advances, changes to Net Income Stabilization, crop insurance tweaks, and possibly mirroring Manitoba’s two tier system.
