Graham New MLA for Birtle Russell, 47 year old farmer from Binscarth, won with a 711 majority over Liberal Ed Shust. Conservative tally 2117, Liberal 1406, NDP 1034. results strengthen Premier Walter Weir's working majority and discount snap election rumors.

Spiel Entries Deadline and Schedule for Farmers Bonspiel

There is still room for entries in the Farmers Bonspiel. Mixed event teams of two men and two women must be in by noon Monday March 3rd. Entries can be left at The Banner office or by phone. Play begins Thursday morning March 6th with a reception that evening at Memorial Hall.

Manitoba rink to represent Elks at national event in Prince Rupert

Norman Robinson Ed Leifer Homer Shepherd and Mrs Adelaide Robinson won the Golden Anniversary event and placed fourth in the challenge. The Neepawa rink led by Merv Grayson will represent Manitoba Elks at the national contest in Prince Rupert in March after winning the provincial finals at Brandon, knocking out Dunes Wowk from Russell. Red Cross Campaign March 1 to 31 marks Diamond Jubilee celebrating 60 years of service. Volunteers and blood donors sustain Red Cross work including clinics water safety home nursing and aid for fire victims. March is Red Cross Month with the annual appeal to fund these services for the year ahead.

Power Toboggans Draw Large Crowd at Russell Ski Club Event

A large crowd filled Memorial Hall for the Russell Ski Club Sportsman Dinner fundraiser. Guest speaker Don Lawson of Windy fame entertained while officials and locals praised volunteers and noted plans for athletic scholarships and future ski activities.

Street Lighting Revisions Approved by Town Council

Russell street lighting will switch to about thirty 175 watt mercury vapour lamps mainly in residential areas. The bylaw passed at the February 18 meeting authorizes these changes and grants Hydro an aerial easement over lot 18, block 127 plan 37. Options to purchase town property were given to F. Clement & Sons Ltd. and W. B. Garnett and Dr. H. N. Lange. A building permit was granted to Ernie Larak for a recreation room in the basement. Total payments amount to $417,485. Mayor J. A. Burgess.

President George Chapman to Attend Farmers Spice Bon Spiel Reception

Mr. George E. Chapman of St. James will attend the Farmers Bonspiel reception next Thursday evening. Since becoming president of the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce he has aimed to visit many points in the province to meet people. He is due to be entertained by the chamber executive and will speak at Indian Automobile Sport Clubs. He has an interest in flying and is expected to share an engaging message.

At its first regular meeting on February 14 the University of Manitoba Senate awarded degrees and certificates to 102 students. Graduates will be invited to Convocation sessions on May 22 and 23. Three Russell teachers, Ross Graham, earned their Bachelor of Arts degrees.
