Local notice lists events and notices in a Manitoba town including a James Fox Concert Co appearance at Wrights Hall on March 14. Also mentions housing ads, school construction plans, spring assizes in Minnedosa March 22, and various community notices.
An enthusiastic constituency meeting nominated A L Bonnycastle as Conservative candidate for the next provincial election. The present member was the only other name mentioned. The nomination was moved by H P Leonard and H R Ross. Bonnycastle addressed the gathering on the elevator issue and current legislative matters. Officers elected included Patron Dr Roche M P Hon Pres Roblin, President Dr Lanigan, Vice Presidents J Maynes G McBain W Dunlop R Keating H DuPre F Percy W Denmark G Speers J Fraser, and Secretary E M Williams. A condolence note was sent to Mrs Lang and resolutions supported Roblin and Ottawa leader Hon Mr Borden on public-life reform and naval policy.
The Russell junior hockey team defeated the Binscarth juniors 7 to 2 at Binscarth on Saturday. Binscarth runs a special train to Birtle tonight for the return game. A win by Binscarth would level the series at three losses apiece, with the final playoff against Russell looming.
The Russell rink is likely to compete in the Minneosa bonspiel opening March 8. Cassidy of Winnipeg set a Winnipeg bonspiel record this year by winning four open events: Tetley Tankard Dingwall McLaren Purity Floor Tuckett and the Governor General Cup for first in the grand aggregate. Russell teams fared poorly at Winnipeg missing prizes, while outside rinks joined in a strong field that mostly stayed in city winnings.
A council meeting of the Rural Municipality of Russell was held in Russell on Friday February 18 with Reeve and all councillors present. Johnson Shaw moved that the $1000 bond from Algoma Steel Bridge Co be accepted and the $450 deposit tender cheque be returned to the company. Carried.
Murrell Murrell-McKinnon moves to buy two cars of tamarac plank from E M Williams for use in the Municipality. One car to Russell, half car to Binscarth, half car to Millwood. Plank 18 feet long priced 30.00 per thousand feet. Carried.
Roblin hosts a meeting of fifty electors despite cold weather as the Roblin The Shell River Conservative Association elects Harry P. Leonard as president Henry Gill as vice president and George L. Speers as secretary treasurer for the year. Delegates H S Leonard W J Dantop John Kennedy and A A Towns are chosen for the local convention. Resolutions endorse the provincial administration express confidence and urge renomination of A L Bonnycastle.
Rev Mr Girling will lead the final service at Millwoon on Sunday morning. Social news notes Mrs Lightheart hosting at the section house and Miss Flynn visiting from Binscarth with Miss C Heap at Assiniboine House. Parade of local residents includes Roy Allan and A G Bagnall visiting Winnipeg, with Mrs Bates visiting Shoal Lake. A carnival at Millwood skating rink Friday judges costumes. Harold Coombs has joined the Strathcona Horse in Winnipeg.
Silverton Miss F Arnott ot Lockerby spent the weekend with relatives in the district. A shortage of a minister affected Minniska and Silver Creek churches last Sunday. Some fashion followers long for “accordion pleated” styles this season. The telephone is seen as an instrument of amusement as well as utility.
Russell residents enjoyed a cold but lively house warming at Jas Arnott’s with guests from far and near. Dancing persisted into the early morning as Dunsmore and Burke provided music and R. Keating played the bow. Gemmil and Broadfoot served as floor managers and a luncheon was served.
A Shellmouth branch of the Grain Growers' Association was organized on Saturday with Alex Stewart as president and R W Patterson as vice president. W S Wallace was secretary treasurer and directors included G Wise E Drake A Overholt W Sudbury E Sudbury and W Patterson. Monthly meetings were set for the first Saturday at 3 pm in the school house. The secretary was to merge Grainsby members with the Shellmouth branch and a request was made to the Canadian Northern Railway to favor Russell and to label the siding west of Russell as Endcliffe.
John Neild painless dentistry visit noted in Angusville. John McEvoy spent Monday and Tuesday in Rossburn. Seed oats car from Saskatchewan arrived for Charles Wilson. Winnipeg bonspiel visitors have returned and resumed duties. Tennis club meeting set for March 1 at 8 p.m. in E M Williams' office. Athletic Club held Feb 19 with John Angus presiding. officers elected and reports approved.
Bavelaw farmers stay busy hauling wood as bitter cold sets in. The pastor Mr McInnis enjoys good congregations despite the chill. Bavelaw school remains closed for lack of a teacher. Trustees are slow to act.
Mr J A Brown reports on the Prince Albert convention for the association. The Grain Growers social at Bavelaw school house drew about 300 people with 35 new names added to the Spy Hill Grain Growers Association roll. The next social is planned for Gerald school house on March 18 at 2 pm with outside speakers expected.
Shellmouth mourns Cess Pearpoint youngest son of Mr and Mrs Pearpoint who died on Tuesday morning after a knee injury led to septic pneumonia. He was active in hockey rifle and football clubs and played for Shellmouth against Langenburg. Funeral held at D J Wrights house and Presbyterian church with wreaths and a large crowd. He leaves behind parents a brother and two sisters.
