Mayer Urges Higher Wheat Prices in Canada

Portage-Marquette MP Charles Mayer urged the Canadian Wheat Board to raise the initial price for Red Spring Wheat and Durum from 4.25 to tighten profits and curb rising market prices. Vancouver red spring wheat traded around 7.60 this week as Board records show the agency has bought 750000 tonnes less than sold at the low initial price in thirteen weeks of the crop year. Esmond Jarvis noted strong world demand could let crop agencies drain board grains, with prices not expected to fall soon. Mayer also said a $2.60 selling spread over the initial price has earned the Board about seventy million more in revenue than the initial prices paid.
