Granddaughter and great granddaughter slain near Kenora
Alex Burtnick of Angusville learns of the brutal shooting deaths of his granddaughter Marilyn Jurko Burtnick and her five year old daughter Angel at their home near Jaffray Melick Gust outside Kenora Ontario. A man described as Jurko’s boyfriend was arrested and charged with two counts of second degree murder, later upgraded to first degree. Kristina, the six year old survivor, waited for police after calling 911.

Library goes computer with CD Rom cataloging system
The Russell and District Library moved into the computer age by installing a CD Rom computer using the Biblio package. It will track books nationwide, with six disks totaling up to six million records. Staff expect about a year to program all titles and make illustrator based searches possible on screen.

St Lazare Driver Reprimanded After Downtown Mishap
RCMP responded to a late night driving spree in St. Lazare early November 27. The vehicle failed to stop at Dupont and Chartier, struck a parked car, then sped down Main Street before charges were pursued on the second page.

Dauphin NDP nominates Struthers for next election
Dauphin New Democrats chose Struthers as their candidate at a Nov 24 nominating meeting at Elks Hall. Struthers, a Winnipegosis teacher, defeated Mary Hudyma and led the campaign with over 200 attendees and 179 ballots cast. He previously ran for Dauphin-Swan River in the 1993 federal election.
