Linen flax project eyed for western Canada industry
A $45 000 cooperative project by Flax Growers Western Canada, funded by Agriculture Canada and provincial governments, aims to test growing and processing linen flax in Alberta Saskatchewan and Manitoba. With no current North American production, tests since the 1950s faced low yields but rising fiber demand and higher petroleum prices may revive feasibility. Dr. Clay Gilson warned rising expectations strain the economy, urging ACWW and allied groups to study underlying causes. The rural women's seminar in Winnipeg November 12–14 served as prep for Canada's 1983 ACWW international convention.
