Farmers fear upstream drainage project raises downstream floods
The Watershed Association of Foam Lake Sasman and Chomey Beach proposes a seven kilometre ditch from Fishing Lake to Hazel Lake and Stoney Lake with control structures to increase Assiniboine River flow. Sask Water would study the impact under a three year moratorium exemption. Fishing Lake would drop about three feet. Downstream residents worry about cumulative effects and a 140 cfs increase stressing a system already near capacity.

Water project sparks cross border concerns in Manitoba and Saskatchewan
Officials warn the Fishing Lake plan could raise total dissolved solids and sulphates in Lake of the Prairies, risking potable water quality for Canora. Residents fear dilution may not counter effects, while regulators note the study remains incomplete and local watershed groups must submit concerns by September 5.
