Transport costs push up milk price in Russell move
Andrea Long reports that Russell grocers raised milk prices by one cent per litre after notices on August 12 of a wholesale price rise. The Manitoba Prices Review Commission explained the zoning system, with a base price rising as milk travels further from the zone center. Dauphin was the center before Manco Dairies shifted processing to Brandon on April 1, increasing transport costs by one cent per litre and shifting the center to Brandon. Bill Zaporzan of the Dauphin plant said operations moved to Brandon for better packaging and that Dauphin expanded cheese production to offset the change.
