Exhibitors from Spy Hill Russell Rocanville Langenburg Welwyn and Gerald showcased treasures at Spy Hill Community Hall on Thursday Aug 13 for the third annual Hobby Fair sponsored by the local Ladies Auxiliary to the Canadian Legion BELIL. Attendees enjoyed crochet embroidery knitting and displays of relics military badges Indian artifacts and carved wood as well as a flower show and lunch service.

District Retailers Hold First Picnic at Silver Beach
The first annual Russell and District Retail Merchants Association picnic drew about 200 people from most district towns except St Lazare, Birtle, and Binscarth. Activities included races, softball, ice cream, boat rides, and a sing song finale. Contributions raised 45 dollars for the Canadian Save the Children Fund, with key organizers and volunteers named from several towns.

Canadian National Railways announced new all time highs in grain marketing and loading for 1952 53 crop year. J R McMillan vice president Western region said CN marketed 975 678 000 bushels ending July 31. Total grain loaded reached 352 551 000 bushels surpassing 1951 52 records.

Shipley’s Garden Show Place Exudes Floral Splendor in Russell
A Russell garden of Mr H J Shipley dazzles with a 168 foot hedge of sweet peas and a sea of marigolds snapdragons dahlias nasturtiums and evening scented stocks. The elder gardener tends raspberry and strawberry patches and a greenhouse filled with tomato plants. An early riser he prides himself on labor of love in the garden and exhibits at the Russell Horticultural Show on August 29.

Council weighs fate of RCMP property on Memorial Avenue
In 1946 the RCMP bought land on Memorial Avenue south of the Meadows residence for a barracks that was never built. At the Aug 13 meeting Russell Town Council warned the land could be returned to the town unless building plans began. The secretary was told to write Hon. Stuart Garson. Henry Siwak bought lots 1 to 5 inclusive, block 95, plan 6 for 1750. Accounts totaling 1779.09 were approved. Councillors Burgess Cross and Bicknell attended. Mayor Mather presided.

Ellen Fern Morrison a pioneer resident of Shellmouth died in Roblin hospital Saturday at age 70. Born Ellen Orr at Woodside she married Neil Morrison in 1902 and lived in Shellmouth. She was a longtime Women’s Association member, hosted quilting bees and welcomed neighbors. She leaves daughter Mrs. Whyte son William and Victor of Shellmouth a sister and three brothers. Funeral held at Shellmouth United Church with Rev. Zwicker officiating. pallbearers listed. burial at Shellmouth Cemetery.

Western Canada Kiwanis To Meet At Clear Lake
The Kiwanis Club of Russell will attend the Western Canada Kiwanis District convention August 23 and 24 at Clear Lake. Kiwanis International trustee Moyer of Topeka Kan will be featured speaker during the three day meeting with delegates from nine clubs in the district comprising about 3,000 leaders. The program includes committee conferences, plans for the coming year and officer elections. Harry H. Ross DVM of Brandon Manitoba will preside as governor. Moyer, an International Board member since 194? and former Missouri Kansas Arkansas district governor, blends law work with farming and livestock interests in Kansas.

Russell Horticultural Fair Promises Record Exhibits
The Russell Horticultural Society hosts a large fair on Saturday August 29 at the Russell Memorial Rink with no entry fee. Last year saw over 400 exhibits across 114 classes in flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Grand aggregates carry cash prizes and trophies funded by local sponsors. judging ends with an evening auction of the displays. President Dr F L Skinner presides, with RG Ledingham as vice president and E W Robertson as secretary-treasurer.

Safe crackers foiled at Schepp and Hande store
Burglars attacked the Schepp and Hande store in Marchwell but were repelled, saving about one thousand dollars. The burglars damaged safes and escaped with around fourteen dollars. Police were on the case Sunday, with no report of a capture yet.

Russell notes a storied naval career for Captain Angus Boulton of HMCS Star Hamilton Ontario. He served as executive officer on HM C Ottawa and commanded the Annapolis St Lawrence and Rimouski during World War II. He earned the Distinguished Service Cross and was mentioned in dispatches. In 1947 he became chief of staff to the flag officer Atlantic Coast and in 1950 served ashore as director of naval reserves at naval headquarters.
