Farm outlook bright as moisture promises good spring
Agricultural rep Otto Penner reports above normal moisture in Augsell area with soil and reserve moisture high thanks to late 1980 rainfall. Russell Crop District shows 96 percent available moisture for summer tillage and 78 percent in stubble, despite recent winds and slight precipitation gains. Penner warns limited spring runoff may affect cattle and dugouts, while hayfields need more rain. Russell soils retain water due to cool temps and clay-loam composition.

Embargo study questioned by Canadian wheat board official
Senator Hazen Argue argued that an NDP commissioned study on losses to farmers from the Russian grain embargo is flawed. He noted price fluctuations were driven by factors beyond the embargo such as global harvest expectations, interest rates, and related price declines. The cabinet is reviewing an interdepartmental embargo compensation report and is to decide soon.
