First Annual Double Header Bonspiel Winners Revealed

Nick Magnowski presents the trophy to the Birtle rink skipped by Albert Wotton Angus Blellock Jim Brown and Alan Wotton. Willis Zimmer Russell won the second event Murray Wilson Russell won the third event Carl Ostapowich Russell won the fourth event. Bob Schwaim's Russell rink won the First Biggest End trophy. The oldest rink featured Dunc Wowk Ron Collins Sandy Craig and Len Claridge. Jim Wilson won the draw.

Dick, a nine year RCMP veteran, arrived in Russell in 1974 from Shoal Lake. He works Rural and Municipal Sections with two years on Highway Traffic. A New Brunswick native, his wife Sylvia from Newfoundland, they have three sons. He is a breathalyzer technician and trains in accident and criminal investigation. He and a fellow officer run a youth program in St Lazare, boosting police public relations. He just returned from a Police Community Relations conference and will showcase at the Russell Trade Fair in May.

Birtle Russell Liberal Nominating Convention Date Set

The Birtle Russell Liberal executive met on Monday April 4 to choose a date for the nominating convention. It was decided to hold the Liberal Nominating Convention on April 19 with Provincial Liberal leader Charles Huband in attendance at the Binscarth Community Centre. A pot luck supper starts at 6 30 p m followed by nominee elections at 8 p m. The event is open to the public with voting limited to Birtle Russell Liberal members.

Rent Waived This Year On Crown Grazing Land

Government announces no rent for crown grazing lands this year. Culture Minister Sam Uskiw says rents align with beef production returns, following years when rents were waived due to low beef profits in 1974 and 1975. Local taxes and appeals rights to municipal councils kept, amid revenue concerns from municipalities.

Shamrocks Eliminate Rams From M A H A Playoffs

The Killarney Shamrocks beat the Russell Rams 5 to 2 in the deciding third game to win the best of three M A H A B playdowns. Marcel Mongrain scored five goals in Russell's 7-5 win in the previous game. Keith Fawcett and Tom Outlerwaite led the Shamrocks in net and defense amid a series of minor penalties.
