The Strawberry Social held in the annex on Saturday evening benefited the Organ Fund. Attendance included out of town visitors and notable performances by Mrs Violet Bell and Mrs Joyce Maxwell. Proceeds reached 21.66 with additional donations from local families, boosting the total to 694.11 toward an 838.95 Thomas organ.
Greta Margaret Williamson and Donald Robert Gordon were joined in marriage at Knox Presbyterian Church Selkirk on August 17 with Dr Gardiner Dickey performing. The bride wore dulled satin with sequins and pearls. reception followed at Lutheran Hall. The couple will reside at 147 Dorchester Ave Selkirk after a trip through the States.
The W A S and W M S held their regular meeting on Tuesday September 10 led by President Mrs J Cormack with hymn 392 and prayer. Scripture read by Mrs Williamson. Study books arrived late. Bazaar planned for November 6 and the W A voted to buy a Thomas electric organ.
Manitoba Telephone System reports a delay in the Swan River to Flin Flon microwave relay link due to supplier installation schedule issues. The service date shifts from late September to late October while the Swan River to Brandon segment remains on track for mid 58. Construction crews are active between Swan River and Dauphin.
A Monday afternoon blaze destroyed the farm home of Mr and Mrs William Kozak six miles north of Birdtail. Mrs Kozak was home alone and rushed for help but the fire advanced too fast. Loss is estimated near 5000 with little insurance. the couple now lives in a small summer kitchen on the property.
A Sunday birthday gathering honored Mrs Leo Gensorek and Mrs John Maeyshyn on September 5 with about 50 guests from Rossburn and Angusville. The hosts, two chiffon cakes baked by Mrs Harry Werbowski and Mrs Mike Antonin, drew praise as Mr Harry Boychuk spoke and gifts of trilight lamps were presented.
The Hospital Aid thanks contributors including pillowcases from Mrs. D Baydock of Mears Michigan, towel set from Mrs. Wm Stitt of Vista, a picture from Mrs. Mary Ternowskietski, pillowcases from Mrs. Mike Saley, pillowcases from Mrs. Steve Barnesky, wall plaques from Mrs. Helen Ducharme, 1 quart enamel from Mrs. Harold Brown, 12 bars of soap from Mrs. Stanley Magdaniuk, and a Pyrex pie plate from Mrs. Jean Cleland.
In Manitoba the Campbell government is urged to improve road building with long term planning. The piece notes Manitoba lags behind Saskatchewan and other provinces in highways and secondary roads and cites a shortage of engineering staff despite recent large appropriations.
Rural Municipality of Rossburn council met Saturday evening with all members and reeve present. Ed Shust presided as minutes from the prior meeting were read and approved. One Old Age assistance application was approved and PF A assistance is being sought for townships 19 range 23 24 25. R G Smellie named acting solicitor. One extra street light authorized in Birdtail. Bills approved and adjournment set for October 6.
The Editor prints E. H. H. letter condemning heavy trucks racing through the village south end. The writer urges action to stop high speed duos on streets, warning of potential disaster and danger to children and property.
At the Pentecostal WMC gathering held Tuesday at Mrs. J. Sherritt’s home a cushion was presented to Mrs. Coughlan with best wishes from the ladies. A dainty lunch followed, as Mrs. Coughlan prepares to leave for Brandon.
Mrs. Ara Peden celebrated her 80th birthday on February 1 with about seventy five friends at tea and cake. A pioneer to Rossburn since 1880 she is active in the Pentecostal Church and helps with Waywaysee cappo Church services. Her family includes eight children, widower William Peden died in 1921, and she preserves Bible Corner in the Review. A family dinner followed the next evening honoring her and her brother Matthew Hamilton of Vista on his 84th birthday.
Miss Nadya Nahirniak and Miss Anne Kirkness, nursing graduates, join the hospital staff. Donations from Mrs. H. Miller, Mrs. M. Gapka, Mr. J. VonHagen and the Antecostal Church group aid furnishing the new wing. Also notes the birth of a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. George Astakeesic on September 9.
Juliana Sandra Sicinski and Alan Sidney Turner were wed at St Patrick’s Church Atikokan Ontario on Saturday September 7 at 4 p.m. Father Wittig officiated and the bride wore a French satin gown with seed pearl headpiece and veil. Matron of honor Marion Mazor and bridesmaid Glenn Watt assisted. reception followed at Maple Crescent Atikokan. The couple leaves for a southern United States honeymoon voyage.
