Victory Scroll Ceremony honors Manitoba units in October service

A Victory Scroll for every unit in the province was presented October 11 at the Legislative Buildings in Winnipeg. Unit No. 28 covering Shellmouth, Bouton, Russell, Silver Creek and Rossburn accepted a quota of 230,000 from 1,590 buyers. Speakers included L G McWilliams and H E Sellers with a local recruit addressing the crowd on sacrifice and duty, citing St John 15 13 and Isaiah 48 17. The program closed with prayers and patriotic songs.

Indian Honour Roll Unveiled at Presbyterian Church

On Sunday October 17 1943 a well filled Presbyterian Church witnessed the unveiling of an Honour Roll listing Reserve young men serving in the armed forces. Chief Prince Astakee lifted the Union Jack from the Roll, which carried a maple leaf border and two small Union Jacks. He spoke patriotically of volunteering, freedom, and Britain’s road to victory, with the address interpreted by Peter Kee watincappo. the congregation then sang.

The event featured roses carna tions and chrysanthemums, with Mrs N Hicks and Mrs A B Mitchell pouring, and over fifty friends attending. The couple, both natives of Scotland, wed in St Louis Missouri in 1893 and later moved to Woog then Ranchvale Man district.
