Blind girl handles unique Winnipeg switchboard at CNIB

Miss Pawluk, blind since birth, operates an eight line Winnipeg switchboard for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind on Portage Avenue West. Orders are jotted on a pad, Braille shorthand used for entry, and calls completed swiftly with a cheery voice. The system uses markers instead of cords and braille keys, showcasing training of blind workers who earn by leveraging skill and brain.

Anniversary notice as The Review enters third year

The Review marks its third year with gratitude to readers for patience with past mistakes and pledges of improvement. Due to paper scarcity and rising costs, subscription will rise to 1.50 per year and all must be prepaid per government rules. Readers overdue by over a month may have subscriptions discontinued to obey the law.

Mrs H Meintosh spent the weekend with relatives in Roblin. Wm Dawson of the RCAF Brandon and Gar Lawrence Urbanowski of Camp Shilo were here on leave. Stanley Budz of RCAF Winnipeg visited last week. October 11 marks Thanksgiving Day and a Dominion holiday with all businesses and the Post Office closed. Edward Budz became first man at Birdtail after CNii work. Mr and Mrs P Banikowski and Sylvia left for Sudbury Ontario after staying with the stater's parents. Rodney Budz of the RCAP Souris was home for the weekend. A plane circled town on Sunday September 26 around 4 pm. Valley School pupils, under Miss M Melnychuk, raffled a cushion Friday for the Red Cross, raising $12.00 for Rossburn.

Winnipeg resident Mr. T. Hanlin is in the district while Lance-Cpl Frank Steale visited his wife near Portage la Prairie. The Vista Ladies Aid plans a tea at Mr. Menzies Shop Rossburn on Saturday October 9 from 9 to 12. LAC and Mrs Wingert with daughter visited A Chesney. A Woods of Oakburn and E Woods of Ontario called on W J Hamilton. S Labay family visited Sitko family. The Boys and Girls Club Pair event on Sept 27 was a great success with prize winners listed in rotation.
