Liberal Rural Development critic pushes tax loophole fix
Gilles Roch introduced an amendment to The Municipal Assessment Act to close the tax exemption loophole for Manitoba Native groups. He argued municipalities could lose hundreds of thousands in revenue and urged federal responsibility for compensation. The amendment targets only crown lands and aims to prevent revenue shortfalls while noting aboriginal rights are federal jurisdiction. Harold Driedger supported municipal taxation while acknowledging Liberal stance on rights.
