District 4-H Rally Draws 33 Clubs In Rossburn July
The 1963 4-H Rally for Shoal Lake-Hamiota area held in Rossburn July 8 drew 33 clubs. Awards included T. Eaton watches for Shirley Reid and Fay Lelondo, with L. C. Johnston presenting. Queen Jan Finkbeiner crowned. Princesses Joan Leland and Kathie Hanan. Spoons awarded to Rossburn girls. numerous ribbons and project awards listed.

The 1962 auditors report was adopted. Council ordered eight boiler culverts and approved By Law 875 dissolving Birdtail No. 1263 and transferring land to Rossburn No. 2358. Secretary-Treasurer to take two weeks holiday in July 1963. $20 expenses for convention in June 1963 approved. Last month’s total was $1,181.46. Council adjourned to meet August 13, 1963.

Large Pickerel Caught at Fish Lake In Manitoba
Two prize pickerel were caught at Fishing Lake in southern Manitoba. On Tuesday Stewart Bowley of Binscarth landed a 9 lb fish about 2 ft 7 1/5 in long with 15 percent girth. On Wednesday Stan Lenewich of Brandon caught an 8 42 pounder, 26 inches long with 15 inch girth.

Rossburn Fair Day Sunday July 16 Players Meet
The Rossburn fair directors plan a big July 16 program with Smiling Johnny and His Western Pals from North Battleford providing afternoon entertainment and music for the evening dance. Exhibits livestock and displays draw large entries. Senior Invitation Ball Tournament features Rossburn vs Strathclair at 2 pm with Angusville and Elphinstone meeting at 4 pm and finals at 6:30 pm.

Former Rossburn Residents Visit Home Town
Two Rossburn natives now in Winnipeg, Rowland Shipley and Bert Glavin, toured their old hometown visiting long time residents. Glavin worked at Bank of Toronto Rossburn starting 1921 while Shipley’s family once ran the local butcher shop near John Herchak’s General Store. They plan another stop at the town’s summer resort at Fishing Lake.

Longtime Oakburn Lawyer J. W. Smith Dies at 63
John Wilfred Smith Q C of Oakburn died June 28 at Assiniboine Hospital Brandon at age 63. Born November 16 1899 in Gladstone he studied at Manitoba and earned BA and law. He practiced in Oakburn since 1929 and was Queen’s Counsel appointed 1950. He served on Shoal Lake District hospital board Oakburn School Board and Arbitration Board. He married Margaret Kozyk in 1933 and had two daughters. Funeral July 2 at Westminster United Church Shoal Lake with interment in Shoal Lake cemetery.
