The Women's Institute met in the church annex with 15 members and 11 visitors. They planned to canvass for the March of Dimes and set a Tag Day for January 24. A future Bingo will raise funds. Miss Batho from Shoal Lake gave a copper tooling demonstration. A pot luck lunch followed.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Knox United Church in Russell for Robert Rutherford 87 a Silver Creek district pioneer who died Saturday at Sacred Heart hospital He was born in Tavestock Ontario in 1871 moved to Manitoba in 1881 farmed in Silver Creek and retired to Russell in 1929 He leaves a daughter Alison Hamilton a son Johnston seven grandchildren two great grandchildren and a sister Mrs Flynn He was predeceased by his wife in 1943 and a son Lloyd in 1932 Active pallbearers included Russell Coulter and Keating among others.
Two school rinks traveled to Foxwarren for the School Bonspiel on January 10. Lavern Clubley’s team won the Grand Challenge with Elaine Cleland Eddie Kreshewski and Olivia Verbowski. A second rink led by Wayne McKnight lost two tight games.
The Vista W A met at Mrs. Margaret Miller’s home with nine paid members and average attendance six. They quilted nine quilts, sold carnations for Mother’s Day, held two bazaars, sent flowers and fruit to the sick and in sympathy, and draped curtains in the church. They bought a Life Membership for a WM S member, sent delegates to provincial and regional conventions, paid the year's hydro bill, and made donations to Bible Society, Church Board, Missions, and Osborne Home. Officers elected: President Mrs. Wm. Stitt, Vice President Mrs. Arthur Chesney, Sec Treas Mrs. Harvey Hamilton.
Residents living south of Rossburn are called to an important meeting at Irwins Garage this Friday at 8 p.m. The gathering aims to discuss local concerns and community matters requiring attendance.
On Saturday January 10 several beginners joined four rinks and had fun. The next day reported soreness and liniment rumors suggest many returned for another try in a light hearted community skip.
The Christmas wedding joined Audrey Rowena Field of Courtenay and Robert Keith Stitt of Wells and Rossburn on Saturday evening at St George's United Church. The RCMP groom, son of Mr and Mrs R W Stitt, wore formal attire as relatives and a Royal Canadian Mounted Police contingent attended. The ceremony featured music by Leslie Ross and David Arnot, with a lace gown, veil, bouquet, and attendants described in detail.
Hon. Alin Hamilton states the Crow’s Nest Pass grain freight rates will not be changed and any future increases will be borne by the nation. R. Usiek of the Manitoba Farmers Union calls the remark the most reassuring and significant on freight rates to date.
Eleven pool elevator associations gathered in Rossburn on January 18 with over 200 members. The vote, led by C. C. Hunt, approved uniting with prairie farm groups for a mass delegation to Ottawa. Associations named include Inglis Cracknell Russell Silverton Birdtail Rossburn Vista Oakburn Elphinstone Sandy Lake and Erickson.
A Christmas banquet at Waywayseecappo Presbyterian Church on December 23, 1958 served nearly 300 in a long afternoon. Dignitaries included MLA R. S. Clement and local officials. Chief Lynn McKay welcomed guests. Santa arrived at 4 PM as reserve members and children enjoyed the day, with many thanks to organizers, donors, and the WMS ladies. Cash and in kind gifts supported the dinner and Christmas tree fund, including a list of donors and contributions totaling over 43 dollars plus groceries and turkeys.
The January joint meeting of the W A and W M S met January 6 in the church annex with 15 members. They discussed fund raising, floor painting for spring, and expressed thanks for Christmas parcels to shut-ins. The WMS elected Mrs L Alexander as president and covered reports, scripture, and 1959 dues.
