A wartime Canada editorial urges ordinary citizens to uphold honesty and selflessness across business, municipal, and political life. It warns against a creeping revolutionary left or right, cites Italy as caution, and argues democracy must rekindle its revolutionary spark to prevent tyranny.
The Pulp and Paper Industry of Canada calls all returning pulpwood cutters to resume work to prevent war production interruptions. Farmers and farm workers who can leave winter farming are urged to apply for off season pulpwood jobs with good pay, food, camps and transport arranged. The policy states farm workers will return to farming in spring and postponement of military service for such work remains unaffected.
In a Toronto sermon Archbishop J. C. McGuigan explains the Catholic view of socialism. He notes the word has many meanings from Leninist to national railways and warns against equating all forms with a single label. He says the Church reserves socialism for a condemned doctrine that denies private property.
The Church defends private property as essential to private liberty. The state controlling material things risks abject dependence and erodes human personality. The Church protests socialism's denial of private property and asserts the right to property as a fundamental human right.
