On Saturday February 22 the Inglis Midgets lost to Rossburn Midgets 11 to 3 in an exhibition. Five penalties were handed out, three to visitors and two to the home club. Scorers included Rossburn Kowal Huston and Woytowich with unassisted and assisted goals across the three periods.
The Fair Society reports about 38 dollars raised at the Agricultural Bingo held on Wednesday February 19. Organizers thank all helpers and donors, with special appreciation for Maron Slow for projecting films. Prizewinners include Mrs Langridge Mrs J Mychasin Mrs McIntosh Bill Pokropany John Collins Bob Stitt Mrs E Caldwell John Mankir Mike Silewich Mrs O Elvers Elaine Hutton.
A 1.6 mm rusty grain beetle damages farm stored grain in Manitoba. If grain heats, insects are present. Countermeasures include removing crust, moving grain to a clean granary, exterior snow fences, fumigation when needed, protective gas masks, and conducting treatments when grain temperature is low. Mike Sotas was the unanimous choice of the CCF nominating convention in Birtle Tuesday evening as CCF Candidate for Marquette Constituency. 195 delegates and supporters attended with MP Scotty Bryce as guest speaker. Lawrence Ryan David Pratt and William Yuel withdrew. A 25 member campaign and finance committee was formed with Eugene Caldwell heading it.
Despite the coldest night of winter, over 60 persons enjoyed the GST Social Evening in the Annex on Friday February 14. Betty Ann Clubley answered the Oscar question to win the major prize. a candy sale raised 5.50 for C.G.I.T. A silver collection covered expenses and girls served lunch before parting remark about laughter being medicine.
The Women’s World Day of Prayer gathering met Friday afternoon at the Pentecostal church with 38 in attendance. Participants included Mrs. Dave Sherritt Mrs. Alfred Mitchell Mrs. Wm Stitt Mrs A MacPhail Vista Mrs McKnight Mrs Williamson Mrs Armstrong Mrs Cormack Mrs McIntosh Mrs J Sherritt and Mrs Neil. A. MacPhail spoke on the theme The Bread of Life and the Canadian Girls In Training led by Mrs Andrew sang Sweet Hour of Prayer.
Funeral service for Mike Luhowy, 89, was held February 24 at U G Catholic church Oakburn with burial at U G cemetery. He died February 21 after a short illness. Born September 1869 he married Agnus Tutkaluk in 1896. He is survived by his wife one daughter Mary Rokosz Saskatoon and three sons Anton Vista Nick Rossburn John Winnipeg and 17 grandchildren. Pallbearers were his grandsons Tony Stanley Mervin Zane Milton and Ronnie Raginski Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Obituary notice for Bill Anderson formerly of Silverton now in Russell with funeral held last Saturday. Burial at Silver Creek cemetery. The Rossburn Local of the Manitoba Farmers Union held its annual meeting on February 13 1958 at the Legion Hall with about thirty members present. A full slate of officers was elected and three constitutional amendments passed. The delegates reported on the Winnipeg convention, and district director Wm Shwaluk praised the union’s growing influence and noted grants from United Grain Growers and Manitoba Pool Elevators. He cited 300 telegrams to Ottawa during Farm Bill No 270 debates and urged greater membership for stronger bargaining power.
The Rossburn Hospital Aid met at Mrs. Anne Lion’s home on Tuesday evening February 18 with 11 members and 3 visitors. They note a hospital need for a can opener and plan a gift for the New Year’s baby. They thank several helpers for a Rag Drive that raised 9.50 and announce Bingo on Friday February 28 at the Ukrainian Peoples Home.
Funeral rites held Saturday at 10 a m in Rossburn Greek Catholic church for Mrs Helen Sawchuk born 1892 in Pavelche. She moved to Canada in 1912 and lived in Mears Rossburn and Dufrost before passing Feb 17 at her daughter's home. Survived by her children nine grandchildren and sister. Burial in Rossburn Greek Catholic cemetery.
