George Kelso Honored at Manitoba Dairy Convention

At the Manitoba Dairy Convention in Winnipeg on February 17 18 life memberships were awarded. George Kelso of Roblin was elected director and praised for a lifetime in the creamery business. He has managed Roblin and later supervised Smellie Bros. Ltd. plants and stresses high quality butter production.

Rossburn High hosts ice curling bonspiel with three rinks

At the Inglis Bonspiel three Rossburn High rinks competed with Lavern Clobley’s rink finishing second in the Grand Challenge and Tom Carson’s rink winning the second event. Wayne McKnight’s rink dropped out Saturday. Teams included Lavern Clubley Elaine Cleland and others. Upcoming plays on the 27th promise action and a dance follows at the Ukr National Home. Next week could see Rossburn's new school inhabited.

Weather report notes January readings and milder spell

Six weeks of cold weather gave way to a dramatic warm spell with slushy streets. January readings show a high of 36 above and a low of 35 below on January 5, averaging 4 below zero, compared with 1958 averages. Winnipeg reportedly nears a record for consecutive below freezing days, while the community records 24 days since November 1 with temperatures above 30 degrees.

Rossburn Village Council Meets in February Session

The Rossburn Village Council met February 17 1959 with Mayor Earl Moffat presiding and all councilors present. Minutes from January were approved the March 17 Court of Revision date set the 1959 business assessment roll. Old Age Assistance and several poultry permits were approved in part or full the old school demolition under winter works referred to the solicitor. Constable report adopted and plans for a new Fire Hall and Rest Room reviewed tenders called architects Pratt and Li Winnipeg. Meeting adjourned to reconvene March 17.

Vista 4-H Winners Named in Manitoba Award List

Twenty six 4-H seed club members were eligible for the all round award in Manitoba. E W Somers announced winners including Larry Gilchrist Isabella Elwood Brown Crawford Park Henry Smith Russell and Katherine Armstrong Vista with presentations to be held at future district meetings.

Rossburn Hospital Aid Meeting Recap

A Hospital Aid meeting in the Legion Hall on February 18 had 13 members and 1 visitor. Mrs. W. Stitt volunteered to lead March hospital mend ing efforts. Pillowcases and Scissors will be purchased next month. hand towels are needed and donations are welcome. A Bingo is planned for March 11 in the Legion Hall. prizes may be donated at Slow's Garage. Next meeting is March 24 in the Legion Hall.

Funeral Rites Held For Mrs Armstrong In Rossburn

Mrs Mary Jane Armstrong aged 99 died February 18 at her daughter's home in Rossburn after a long illness. Funeral services were conducted February 21 at Knox United Church Rossburn by Minister T Ferguson with choir. Interment followed at Rossburn. Survivors include seven children Jas A, Ruby, Agnes Snider and others with 21 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Rae's Funeral Home oversaw arrangements.

Passing of Oakburn resident

Oakburn resident Tekla Mychalyshyn died at age 59 in Oakburn after a life of family devotion. Visitation at Parish Hall February 1 with prayers by clergy from Brandon and Oakburn, High Mass at Holy Eucharist Greek Catholic Church, burial in Holy Eucharist cemetery. Pallbearers named. survivor family includes husband Fred and seven grandchildren. Raginski Funeral Home noted longtime Oakburn resident and community donor.

C.G.I.T Holds Weekly Meeting

The 20th meeting of the C.G.LT. group was held Monday evening with 12 members present. Elaine Cleland presided, Jean Andrew acted as secretary, and members agreed to buy a muffler, purchase gifts for 9 year old boys, collect 5 lbs of used clothing, and donate $10 to Special Objects work.
