Shrove Tuesday marks a savouring day for pancake lovers with origins in 11th century feasting before Lent. Pancakes known as blinis or crepes are linked to symbols of rebirth and life, and vary from sweet to savory with many toppings.
Harry Boychuk of Rossburn named among seven Good Citizenship Award recipients by the Tourism Industry Association of Manitoba for promoting tourism. Premier Howard Pawley to present awards March 17 at Brandon. tickets available from T I A M at 943 1551.
Leonard Derkach, a 40 year old farmer from Russell, won the Progressive Conservative nomination for the Roblin Russell riding on February 5 defeating Roblin mayor Lorne Boguski. Party spokesman Vern Rosnoski said 804 members voted with Derkach ahead by 14 points. The campaign focused mainly on agriculture. The riding’s current MLA is Wally McKenzie, planning retirement.
Ladies from all Rossburn churches gathered January 29 for a quilt making bee. Volunteers cut patches and sewed them into quilts destined for the Mennonite Central Committee in Winnipeg and then to Ethiopia. A second quilting day is planned.
Consumer minister Michel Cote announced changes allowing imperial units alongside metric in three retail sectors gasoline and diesel fuels home furnishings and individually measured foods. Exemptions for small retailers ease weighing and measuring rules, while advertising and labeling may use both systems.
