Public insurance ends year with surplus amid theft rise
Manitoba Public Insurance reported a 1993 94 unaudited year end surplus despite a 60 percent jump in auto theft claims and hail damage costs. The Automobile Insurance Division posted net income near 8.3 million for the year ending Oct 31, driven by lower bodily injury costs from no fault injury reform, while theft costs rose to about 15.9 million in 1994. A public awareness campaign will target theft prevention as 1994 saw 8 600 theft claims. The corporation also logs a 1.4 million net loss in the discontinued General Insurance Division due to past reinsurance and unpaid claims.
