Rossburn Review (Newspaper) - December 18, 1999, Rossburn, Manitoba 4 the Rossburn review saturday december 18,1999 Bill Hall look out they re cloning Regis Philbin i blame network television for practically every addiction in be Ever had a except chocolate Chip cookies of course. The cookies were momus fault the old Pusher. But i blame people like Regis Philbin for the rest of it. The paunch i have today you can pin on a woman who spent my childhood worried that i was too Skinny. She was constantly trying to fatten me. I understand that. This was a woman who came out of the great depression a woman who knew there . Was a War on and that 0. Children were starving in Europe and Asia. A thing like that makes a Mother twitchy about a Skinny son who is perfectly healthy but not exactly prepared by his meager fat storage to go through extended hard times. That a Why i done to blame network television for the cookies. Mom did that. But tendencies i have had in life toward drinking and smoking too much As Well As Cating us much fast food Are surely the result of television. If the networks find something the viewers like they pour it on. They done to believe in Small portions. When you see a hot new television show come along like Quot who wants to be a millionaire a and you see network apes scurrying around As they Are now to get their own version of that game show up and running you know Why we arc so inclined to addiction in this society. We Are constantly overdosed. We get to the Point where we can to enjoy just a Smidgen of something. We Are spoon fed excess by copycat network executives. Excess becomes Normal. The blatant plagiarism of network television teaches us the lie that More is better even Normal of television gives us a hot new reality based cop or lawyer or emergency room drama we Are soon swimming in them. In the process it cheapens the pleasure of what we have by diluting it with too much of a Good thing. Its the difference Between eating one Candy bar and eating nine. Its the difference Between enjoying Regis Philbin and his hot new quiz show and 12 such shows. But 12 shows will happen maybe More. Quot who wants to be a millionaire Quot became such a huge instant Success that the other networks began scrambling to Cash in on the craze. Quot millionaire is not. Of course anything new itself. This is at last the second time that a quiz show craze has swept through television. But you have to admit Philbina a show takes the form to a new level. The set looks like the Bridge of the Sta ship Enterprise. The show features eerie music and dancing lights. And for some reason. 90 percent of the contestants Are slightly strange Young men who Giggle in troubling ways who Are each exactly 38 pounds overweight and who look like computer hackers. But what do you expect from a show run by someone named Regis Philbin that sounds less like a person s name than like some unfortunate personal fungus the shows prime Appeal is How easy it looks to make a million dollars. Unlike the questions on a jeopardy a i know almost All of the answers. Most viewers probably do. The trick is the Quot almost Quot part of that. Somewhere in the string of questions Are a couple of categories you done to know a the history of knitting species of tropical fish used Bubble gum collections. And so when you hit one of those knowledge bumps they let you Call a predesignated Friend for help. But of course most of us have friends As dumb As we Are. The friends called on that show done to often know the answer either. Nonetheless its tantalizing to realize you might Well go ail the Way to the million if you could just get on that show it has an Appeal that is like a combination of the state lottery and Bowling a a big score coupled with something that looks easier than it is. But its a one trick Pony. It is not like a Golden sit com or a solid drama series with a Mother lode of great writers something you will want to watch for years. Some of us Are already getting tired of a a millionaire and now Here comes an army of imitators. Run for your mind. I wonder if anyone in network television has Ever thought of answering a competitive threat like this hot new game show by creating something even More original and dazzling. Naw. It la never happen. Soon there will be nothing on television but games and Phil bins by the score. I think ill Call a Friend a and Start a conversation. Bill Hall is a columnist with the Lewiston Idaho Tribune.
