Rossburn Review (Newspaper) - December 18, 1999, Rossburn, Manitoba2 the Rossburn review saturday december 18,1999 Fred Mcguinnes sharing Good news a at Christmas time Here s my Christmas wish for you Good cheer Good friends Good food with frequent reminders that this is a birthday Celebration and its purpose must not become obscured by a retail frenzy. It is my lament that i m a mite Short of Gold frankincense and myrrh at the moment but in honour of the occasion. Ill share a Little Good news. The headline in the Interlake Spectator fairly shouts in print with letters four inches tall Hometown heroes the picture shows four of the broadest smiles possible on one adult and three youngsters. The adult is Bernard Leyandre. The Young ones Are his grandson Derek Lawless ii and friends Carter Goose head ii and William Goose head aged 10. This Story begins with the disappearance of 79-year-old Christine Anderson a victim of alzheimer a who wandered away from her Home on the Fairford first nation. The ramp issued a missing persons bulletin and the Community organized a massive search Effort. The following Day school was cancelled so the students could serve As searchers. Bernard Leyandre recruited his three helpers and they set off into dense Bush walking and calling. After four hours of Tough going they found the missing woman. She was treated for hypothermia in Hospital at Ashcan. There a another senior in the news this week and for a reason that a entirely different. Clarissa Hilts of Moo Somin is h4. In a feature article in the world Spectator she is described As a Small in stature but in everything else she a big in spirit. Big in Energy. Big in enthusiasm. Clarissa Hilts was honoured recently at government House in Regina Lor being an outstanding senior citizen. When she retired from teaching she turned to Community service Church sunday school summer Camp legion Hospital auxiliary. Meals on wheels seniors organizations and this is Only a partial list. This grandmother to six and great grandmother to four spends her spare time a knitting and crocheting. Ill never explain it to you because i done to know the answer Why do we hear so frequently of brotherly love but rarely of the sisterly Type please let me know. Anyway sisterly love was elevated to new Heights recently when the Wiens twins went to the Hospital together. They live at Kleefeld. Pamela needed a new kidney and Vanessa was willing to donate one of hers. According to the Steinbach Carillon these 20-year-Olds made history on two fronts first identical twins to undergo this operation and their blood match was so precise that no anti rejection drugs were necessary. Christmas being a time for nostalgia let me turn the clock Back to 1932. This was the year in which Watson a Pioneer hardware proprietor Jake Smith had an idea of sheer brilliance he would organize a Santa Claus Day. His fellow merchants must have lacked vision because they chose not to support the plan. Smith proceeded on his own. Santa arrived on the car passenger train. He had gifts for All the hundreds of children awaiting him. In the following years those other merchants got the vision and Santa Claus Day in Watson became a major annual event. There Are fireworks Reindeer Sleigh rides tree decorating sporting events and a Community Bonfire. A 20-foot statue of Santa is Watson a Community Symbol.
