Respected Farmer Lorne Lawless Laid To Rest

Last rites for Lorne Victor Lawless aged 60 were held at Rossburn United Church with Rev S Nixon officiating. He died suddenly in Winnipeg on July 26 after a long illness and his funeral drew a large crowd reflecting his popular, neighborly status in the community. He farmed with sons George and Barrie and was active as secretary of the Manitoba Pool Elevator local board, a school trustee, a United Church board member and Rossburn Agricultural Society director. He is survived by his two sons, a grandson, Duaine, and two sisters. Out of town mourners included several relatives from Neepawa Kellwood Shoal Lake and St James. Pallbearers were Herb Taylor Robi Peden Wes Williamson Bert Mitchell Gordon Taylor and Alex Sinclair. Flower bearers were Ronald Hamilton Orville McFeeters and Buster Nickel.

Army caravan tours Manitoba and Ontario exhibit opens August 1

A 14-vehicle mobile Army Caravan with 23 staff plans rural Manitoba and Western Ontario stops from August 1, visiting Birtle Rossburn Virden and other towns through August 12. It features a rifle range, driving aptitude tests, aerial photography, a mobile recruiting office and exhibits on arctic clothing mine detectors and walkie talkies.

Funeral service for Mrs Alexander Brown

The funeral for Mrs. Alexander Brown who died in Winnipeg on Saturday July 29 will be held at Rossburn United Church on Thursday August 3 at 2 p.m. She was 65 years old.

Rossburn Restaurant Opens Under New Ownership

The building previously housing Harry's Coffee Shop and owned by John Pradhnuk now operates as the Rossburn Restaurant. New manager Charlie Lee, formerly of Langenburg, brings years of cafe experience to run a first class eating place.

Drowning Fatality At Silver Beach

Two men drowned when a fishing boat capsized on Fish Lake near Silver Beach 23 miles northwest of Rossburn. Survivors include Robert McBride who attempted a rescue. Bodies recovered by Rossburn and Russell RCMP. Victims Joseph Wiwsiawski 28 Winnipeg and John Kolody 33 Russell.

Calf Club Sale Nets Over Four Thousand Dollars

The Rossburn Calf Club sold eighteen calves after the fair, totaling 4 054.66 dollars, about 225 dollars per animal. The top price calf earned 305.06 dollars at 33 cents per pound. Prize winners are listed elsewhere in this paper.

Celebrate 60th Anniversary of Geo and Mrs Fardell

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Geo Fardell of Red Deer Alberta who marked their 60th wedding anniversary on Tuesday August 1 They came to Canada in 1906 settling at Rossburn and later farmed in Angusville and Birdtail districts before moving to Winnipeg to live with their daughter Mrs J Fred Spence Their daughters Mrs Wm Craig and Mrs Allan Smith now reside in Red Deer while Mrs Wm A Wither lives in New Westminster They have twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren Mrs Fardell enjoys quilting and recently completed a quilt for her grand niece's wedding gift.

Prize Winners At Forty-First Rossburn Exhibition

The Rossburn Agricultural Society lists prize winners across baseball mile race chariot and pony events. Winners include Binscarth Russell Inglis Rossburn in baseball. Ruban Champ and Miss Finch among mile race entries. Dannie Mahone Kelly R and June in half mile. Pat Bone and R Mentuck in Indian Pony. Diverse judging highlighted horses brood mares driving teams and exhibitions led by Alfred Mitchell Tom Stevenson Kenneth Clark and others.
