Local fair highlights many winners in home manufacture items. Winners include multiple women for cakes such as Light Fruit Cake Dark Fruit Cake and Orange Cake and baked goods like Angel Cake and Cinnamon Buns. Also recognized are canned goods, jams, salads, breads, pastries, and various crafted embroidery and textile entries led by named participants including Mrs. Antonin Mrs. Johnston and Mrs. Day.
Mrs Winnifred Reynolds 29 of Decker died in a car crash July 26. Interment followed at Rossburn cemetery after funeral at United Church. She leaves husband Gordon and three sons Herbert Sheldon and Eric, her parents, a sister Mrs J Frith of Brandon, and three brothers. Pallbearers listed.
A trousseau reception Friday afternoon honored Greta Margaret, daughter of Mrs. Williamson. Miss Williamson’s marriage to Donald Robert Gordon is set for August 17. Mrs. Douglas Gordon hosted with Mrs. Williamson and Greta, with Mrs. J. E. Murphy and Mrs. Sterling Veitch presiding. Helpers included Misses Jean Armstrong Anne MecFeeters Reita Stitt and Mrs. Albert Ament Mrs. Alex Cleland.
In the Mears district Alex Pawluk reports a large timber wolf emerged from the park and crossed Charlie Komber’s property, approaching within 100 feet of a feed pen housing 10 calves on Pawluk’s land. The animal’s bold approach implies a venturesome wolf nearby.
Rossburn village council met on Tuesday July 30 with the mayor presiding and all councillors present. Minutes and financial statement adopted. discharge of mortgage on the Community Memorial Arena to be drawn. Fire truck charges outside village limits set at 25 dollars under 10 miles and 50 dollars over 10 miles. One Old Age assistance application approved. Two building permits approved and one property assessment added for 1957 taxes. Money by-law for rest room and fire hall to be drawn. Public meeting to inform electors planned for August 13 at 8 p.m. in Village Hall. Next meeting scheduled for August 70.
Inter-Club Show and Sale at Strathclair on July 18 saw four clubs Rossburn Shoal Lake Strathclair and Elphinstone from Shoal Lake Agricultural District. A total of 384 4 H calves were sold. Grand Champion Jim Moffatt Strathclair Calf Club sold for .35 per pound. Reserve Grand Champion Shirley Reid Shoal Lake Calf Club sold for .25 per pound. Overall sale average 18.74. Inter-Club judging saw Shirley Reid Shoal Lake and Jim Geekie Elphinstone top juniors. Brian Purdy and Glen Findlay Shoal Lake top seniors. Rally ran with Strathclair Summer Fair.
Frank Steele of Vista excelled across fairs with twelve entries earning top placements. At Dauphin he gained four firsts and one third plus a best in class prize. Yorkton yielded two firsts four seconds and two thirds. Rossburn saw two entries produce three firsts.
Wednesday evening at Angusville the CCF nomination convention nominated Mike Sotas for the coming provincial election. He won a tight contest over Eugene Caldwell of Rossburn with two other hopefuls declining to run.
A miscellaneous shower in the United Church Annex honored Greta Williamson a bride-to-be for August seventeenth. Guests welcomed her with Here Comes The Bride as she sat in a decorated chair flanked by her mother and Mrs Heneghan. Cor sages were given, gifts were opened and shared, Greta expressed thanks, and a lunch followed.
A July 20 bridal shower honored Loretta Hubert, a bride-to-be on August 17. Mrs. Philip Hubert and Mrs. John Stor zuk escorted her to a decorated chair and presented corsages, with assistances from Misses Jean Twerdowhlib Shirley Kinash and Mrs. Joyce Antonation. Loretta thanked guests, and a luncheon followed.
No paper next week. Winnipeg residents Mr and Mrs John Kozan move to Calgary for work. Fort William couple Mr and Mrs Matt Procyk spend two weeks holiday with Rossburn hosts Mr and Mrs Matt Charney. Ray Cameron of Brandon visits parents A Cameron for weekend. Edward Kozun holiday in Vancouver and returns to Winnipeg for work. Elliot Kozun returns from Winnipeg to help parents. Mr and Mrs Douglas Gordon drive from Selkirk to trousseau tea with Greta Williamson visiting for a few days. Mrs C Drummond and a of Brandon spend week with her parents Mr and Menre Taylor.
