Memoir fragments recounting a long journey by wagon and freight to Rossburn, a dugout home with shared tents, scarce provisions, home made candles, and early farming life. The piece notes families like Porterfield and Porterfield relatives, homesteading, and settlement in the Rossburn area with references to farms, sod houses, and mixed fortunes.
The text describes a couple settling on a farm four miles north of Rossburn at 24-20-26 and living there until retirement in 1931. Mr. Colins notes unlucky years before 1893 gave way to better crops and prices, and he lists numerous difficulties faced in the years that followed.
By authority of Mayor F J G Stitt the Village of Rossburn proclaims public notice that publication of the Review will be discontinued until additional help is secured. Monday August 0th is declared a civic holiday and all businesses except groceries and restraints are asked to govern themselves accordingly.
Rossburn Agricultural Society wraps up its thirty seventh summer fair and sports on July 25 drawing about 3000 attendees. Exhibits in the hall and stock in departments, E J Casey midway, and a two year old trick horse performance highlight a day of racing, tug of war, football and a successful hall dance with Mountain Rangers providing the music. Harness races were absent due to an unregistered track. Races featured Nellie Bly, Gay Puller, Sable Flag, Mischevor McLennan, and Audrey Craig among others.
Mr and Mrs Tayier depart to Winnipeg to settle in the future home. Roland of Ethel visits Gordon Taylor and relatives. Red Cross thanks the Wellwisher for donations. Barn dance at Sam Trakel’s farm attracts a crowd. Residents from Victoria BC Winnipeg Sask and Manitoba travel home after visits. A farewell party honors Detroit and Florida bound travelers Curtis Fox and Buster Fox. Thunderhead film advertised at Rossburn Theatre with showtimes. Various locals visit Winnipeg Carrot River Roblin and Clear Lake for holidays or work.
