Mayer attacked over unlicensed semi-dwarf wheat actions

In the House of Commons Vic Althouse NDPer agriculture critic pressed Charles Mayer minister of state for the Canadian Wheat Board, asking if he farmed unlicensed semi-dwarf wheats and whether his March 22 handling measures were a move to legitimize past practices. Mayer, who runs a Carberry area farm, was questioned on independence and public perception while addressing the new temporary handling rules.

Manitoba boards back full pensions at 55 for educators

Manitoba teachers and school groups urge the province to allow full earned pensions at age 55 for teachers retiring between 55 and 60. The plan, backed by The Manitoba Teachers' Society and endorsed by the Manitoba Association of School Trustees and the Manitoba Association of School Superintendents, would shift 70 percent of the cost to teachers and 30 percent to government to promote earlier retirement and turnover.

Manitoban Honored With Good Citizenship Award in Brandon

Premier Howard Pawley and ITA Manitoba president Don Draper presented Harry Boychuk of Rossburn with a Good Citizenship Award at a Brandon ceremony. Boychuk built a Ukrainian Village Museum on his Rossburn area farm and was among seven Manitobans honored. The plaque cites leadership vital to making Manitoba a great place to visit live and work.

Free rural RCMP service ends in Manitoba levy plan

Manitoba will levy a half mill to fund RCMP policing for rural areas raising about 3.00 to 3.50 per land unit or home. The plan pools 413,888 with 229,000 in grants to equalize costs across municipalities. Brandon Selkirk The Pas receive maximum grants. some cities keep subsidies while others gain first time funding. Spokesmen from MAUM and UMM approve the shift toward fairer policing costs.
