Fragmented World War Era Snapshots From Dated Ledger

A miscellany of wartime tidbits notes Chaucer’s oldest English works on panel art, London lord mayor diamonds, a wounded soldier telegram, an avalanche in the Alps, and reflections on society. It reports on gipsies’ entry to England, saluting orders, and a munition factory worker’s long day. It mentions the Ashmolean’s history, wolves in Russia, statues, nurseries, and a wide range of curiosities from public houses to paper’s invention in China. A parade of brief facts blends cultural, military, and industrial notes with local color and period commentary.
