Nomination Day Rules Shape Roblin Municipal Elections

The October 6 nomination day will apply to Roblin and surrounding municipalities with new rules requiring 25 signatures or 1 percent of voters for nominations, whichever is lesser, plus ward-specific minimums. Three year terms begin after election day October 27, with organizational meetings held 14 days later.

4H Manitoba program promotes youth participation

Join Joan promotes 4H and 24H clubs across Manitoba with about 10 000 youth. Programs develop individuals through projects public speaking demonstrations meetings youth seminars and volunteering. Projects span Home Economics Home Nursing Conservation self determined and photography with age 9 19 to participate.

Renovation Committee Advances Roblin Curling Rink Project

The Roblin Curling Rink Renovation Committee met after 10 pm in Dietrich Radio and TV room with President Lawrence Districh chair. Eight members discussed funds, noting a $100 donation from Roblin Ladies Legion Auxiliary Wilene District and a $125 pledge from the Afternoon Ladies Curling Club. A turkey bingo in October was planned to raise more money, volunteers urged to help with soon starting work parties. Vince and Eunice Reyda will supply one ready furnace for bingo time.

Collegiate Capers Opens School Term With Student Elections

The BC L students began the 71 72 term by electing a new student council slate. President Val Puritch along with other officers were chosen on Sept 22. Several activities start up including intramural sports and coaching by multiple teachers as new staff join the high school.

Manitoba Urges Ottawa To Compensate Farmers

Manitoba presses Ottawa to compensate Canadian farmers at least as much as industry for losses from foreign tariffs and surcharges. Animals in stored grain upcreeping pests warned

Last spring reports of six legged pests in stored grain prompted Manitoba Agriculture to urge grain producers to inspect bins in fall and winter. Most common invaders were the Foreign grain Beetle and the Mite, with the Rusty Grain Beetle absent here. Heavily heated grains and spoilage reduce farmer returns. secure storage bins and sound structures to prevent bursting. A new bulletin on winter storage of tender bulbs is available as Publication No. 422.

Prairie governments unite on common grain policy

Manitoba Agriculture Minister Sam Askiw announced that the three prairie provinces will present a joint stance to federal minister Otto Lang on grain policy. They oppose Bill C-244 and back a two price wheat plan plus net income stabilization, aiming to submit views by October 1. They also seek machinery standardization and a possible joint testing program while cautioning farmers against selling feed grains at discount prices to preserve price stability.
