Canada’s World War II Mobilization and Early Losses
Eight years ago Canada declared war on Germany and formed the Canadian Active Service Force. By the war’s end Canada fielded five divisions and independent brigades, with 7,500 initial troops arriving in the U K on December 17 1939. Seventy three Canadians died en route on the Nerissa, sunk by torpedoes off Ireland April 30 1941. Canadian troops fought in Sicily Italy France Belgium Holland Germany North Africa and Hong Kong, demonstrating extensive overseas service.
