Pesticide Container Disposal Project Progress Report
The federally funded Pesticide Container Disposal project summarizes six months of activity in Manitoba. Team members Thor Thorleifson Pat Roche Al Beauchemin and Terry Smith surveyed about 300 sites finding over 40 percent posed groundwater pollution risks. Reports were sent to municipalities the Environmental Management Division and the federal Environmental Protection Service to guide safe disposal and residue collection. The project educates users about dangers of improper disposal and aims to promote triple rinsing and proper drainage at disposal sites, enabling safe landfilling or recycling. About 105 container collection compounds exist in 54 rural municipalities, with snowballing adoption as more towns implement programs reducing surface and groundwater pollution.

Wheat swath 20 percent, 6 percent combined, 25-30 bu/acre. Rapeseed 90 percent swathed, 20-26 bu/acre. sclerotinia reduced yields. Harvesting advanced in Busgerl and Roblin districts. Port of Churchill Feasibility Study Concludes
Manitoba Chamber of Commerce wrapped a two day fact finding mission on Churchill port’s grain handling potential. They report 165 empty CN boxcars daily and underutilization by 60 percent unless the Wheat Board allocates more grain to Churchill for European shipments.
