Preparing Raspberries For The Winter

As soon as the last berries are picked from the raspberry patch the canes that bore fruit should be cut out near the ground removed and burned. All weak or diseased canes should be cut and the rows narrowed to eighteen inches or less. Not more than seven of the strongest clean canes should remain per foot of row to prevent weakening.

Raspberry frost protection at Morden Farm study

A report by D. D. F. Williams shows raspberry yields peak when canes are bent to the ground in late October or early November and covered with soil over their tips. Hardier varieties like Latham Chief and Madawaska perform well without cover but improve with it. Viking and similar types require snow cover to avoid winter damage. Ensure irrigation if the ground is dry before freeze up to prevent losses.

Tide Rips Mike Causes Parade Chaos in Calgary

A well mannered horse named Mike disrupted the Calgary Stampede parade by biting a naval epaulette from a Navy Recruiting Officer costume. The Alberta Stars of the Royal Canadian Navy depicted recruiting history, led by Lieutenant Charles Stroud, with a press gang cart and a mobile recruiting vehicle. Mike’s patience wore thin during pauses, and he threatened to chew hats from clowns before being led home after the parade ended.

Varieties in Agriculture and the Case for Recommendations

Plant breeders note two risk groups among farmers: those who cling to second choice grains not recommended for their district and those who chase every new variety without area testing. Both paths can reduce yield and cash returns, while harming quality and market stability. The Agriculture Department in Prairie provinces offers annual recommended varieties as a reliable guide to optimize yield, disease resistance, and adaptation.
