Walter Sorbo Wins Grand Championship at Brandon Fair

Walter Sorbo's Hillsburg Lad, a Yorkshire boar sired by a Prince Edward boar owned by Ward Bros. of Deepdale, won the Grand Championship on Tuesday October 23 at Brandon Fair. Ward Bros. placed 8th and 9th in their classifications. Sorbo's purebred son placed 6th in his class.

Canvas Drive For Goose Lake Junior Red Cross

Goose Lake Consolidated School pupils from Grades 1 to IV will collect for the Junior Red Cross again this Halloween. Though the war is over there is ongoing work to support nurseries in England. Please give pennies nickels dimes and quarters when the children call at your home with white boxes and red crosses.

Election results show Thomous and Newton elected to two year terms

Friday turnout strong with 380 electors voting and 545 on the list. Returning officer R P Jakeman reported J M Thomous 231 votes and F A Newton 180 votes for the two year vacancies, with six ballots spoiled.

Smokey Smith VC Hero of Italian Campaign

Pte E J Smokey Smith of New Westminster BC earned the Victoria Cross for a night action near the Savio River in Italy. He held a bridgehead against a German counterattack, knocked out an enemy tank with a Piatis gun, and killed four Germans at point blank range, twice wounded previously in Sicily and Italy. He served with the Seaforth Highlanders and received the VC from the King at Buckingham Palace.

The Silverwood United Church hosted Emily Yakubowski and Edward Friesen in a formal ceremony with attendants and a reception at the bride’s home. Additional October nuptials included Ina Edith Young and Alexander D Brown at Ed Charboneau home, and Mary Marguerite Sweet and Robert Baxter at All Saints Anglican Togo with Maynard music and a community reception. Out-of-town guests traveled from Gilbert Plains Veregin Dauphin and Regina area for the celebrations.

Well Known American Author visits hometown and Dar

Mr and Mrs Albert E Jones of Tulsa Oklahoma visited Roblin Dropmore and MacNutt this week among friends and relatives. Jones is an American author whose book Lure of the North published last year gained popularity in Tulsa. He came from Sussex England in 1907 and homesteaded near Roblin 22 miles north near Boggy Creek. He trapped at Lac La Rocque Pasquet Hills Hudson Bay and near Duck Mountain before turning to farming near Dropmore where he lived 38 years. The Joneses praised Roblin progress and urged a busyation as a good move and plan to return soon.

Hospital by law urged to voters for twenty bed facility

Communication from H. H. Stimpson dated Oct 28 1947 urges ratepayers to back a by law for a twenty bed hospital costing 95000 over 30 years. He notes about 3.00 yearly tax impact per household and rural quarter, cites broad support from landowners and the need for a two thirds vote to pass, arguing one emergency trip to outside hospital justifies the project.
