The Canada Safety Council estimates 33 to 38 traffic deaths expected during the 78 hour Thanksgiving weekend from 6 PM October 8 to midnight October 11, with prior years averaging 61 and a 1966 peak of 109. The council notes Labour Day 1976 shows better records but cites no clear cause.
P J Farmer warns that seat belt laws in Ontario and Quebec may influence safety but other factors matter.
